Lakes Update Jan 06, 2010

Completed Projects:

1) Reforested 640 hectares of Mountain Pine Beetle impacted stands with 1,184,670 trees. Project completed spring 2009.

2) Conducted surveys on 2,500 hectares of Mountain Pine Beetle impacted BC Timber Sales TSL blocks to determine eligilbility to be reforested under the FFT program. Target blocks had a lodgepole pine content of 70% or greater.

3) Conducted surveys on 10,000 hectares impacted by MPB and other pests to support meeting the FFT target tree planting goal for the TSA.

4) Completed 855 hectares of regeneration surveys on areas previously planted under the FFT program to assess plantation survival.

Ongoing Projects:

5) Inititated a research type project on Snowshoe Hares Populations within Harvested Landscapes. The objective is to provide guidance as to how to reduce the risk of hares feeding on plantation trees.

6) Initiated a project to conduct hazard abatement and plantable spot creation by burning debris piles created during last fiscals site preparation program.

7) Planting planning and tendering of planting blocks for 2010 planting is underway.

8) A project is underway to complete the layout and planning components for 330 hectares within Square Lake and West Francois areas which will have an Overstory Removal site preparation treatment conducted under a Forest Licence to Cut.

9) Initiated a project for planning the 2010 survey program. Estimated area is 6,000 hectares.
