Boundary Update Nov 25, 2007

11/26/2007 (All day)

Here's a short summary of what has been happening with the FFT program in the Arrow-Boundary District.

Helicopter overview flights were made at the end of September with District and FFT staff to determine the extent of the 2007 wildfires and make plans for the next steps.   Fires at Nevertouch Lake, Springer Creek, Lemon Creek, Pend O'Reille, and Penstock were reviewed.  Following the overview flight it was determined that the non-licensee obligation FG units that were destroyed by fire should be surveyed ASAP in order to prepare a sowing request and make plans for spring 2009 planting.

Lemon Creek and Penstock fires:
There were no FFT eligible FG units affected by these fires.  Once salvage plans are made for these fires, ground surveys will be done to identify FFT potential for the areas not being salvaged.

Nevertouch Lake:
approximately 230 ha were surveyed in October and a sowing request is being prepared in anticipation of spring 2009 planting.  An estimate for spring 2009 planting is 300 K seedlings.  Once salvage plans are made, additional ground surveys will be done to determine further FFT potential areas.

Pend O'Reillle:
approximately 220 ha were surveyed in October and a sowing request is being prepared in anticipation of spring 2009 planting.  An estimate for spring 2009 planting is 294 K seedlings.  Once salvage plans are made,  additional ground surveys will be done to determine further FFT potential areas.

Springer Creek:
preliminary recces have been done in this fire.  No areas eligible for immediate planting have been identified.  Once salvage plans have been made, an overview survey plan for the area will be developed and surveys will be completed during the 2008 field season.

First Nations information sharing for 2008 projects has been initiated.  Once survey plans have been made, FN groups will be contacted regarding their ability and availability as surveyors.
